DJ Woz - Young Gun

Brought into the Wobble family almost a year ago. DJ Woz has been Smooth Operating the WOBBLE dance floor each and every month with his Deep Space Riddims. His Big Bass and Running Percussive Funk Selection has made him one of Melbourne's most in demand young Dubstep DJ's. We take a bit of time to get to know the man behind the Science - DJ Woz.

Tell us about yourself...

I'm Warwick... I enjoy collecting and playing records. Outside of music I'm working part time as a sculpture foundry assistant and full time studying design at RMIT. It's my 3rd year into it now and going well.

How do you describe the music you play?

I like to select the more percussive tracks. Always equipped with rhythmic bass lines and drums which sound like they have been influenced or derived from jungle / garage compared to the more sparse sounding beats around today... That's the majority of what I've been collecting at the moment. I'm also looking out to more house-oriented tunes like what Martyn and Cosmin TRG are doing at the moment.
On the technical side of things: Anything I can squeeze into 130-140BPM.

What music did you listen to before you got into dance music?

Late 90's hiphop and the Stones Throw label artists like Madlib, J Dilla...The label had plenty of reggae and soul/jazz/funk compilations as well, so I was listening to the original artists/breaks that they liked to sample too. Once I found out about Tek9 / 4hero and other UK based artists that was when I started getting excited about dance music.

Your selection is quite unique. What influences your selection?

When I first got into what was going on in the UK scene I would tune to radio stations like Rinse and Sub.fm online where I found Ruffage sessions hosted by Ben Ufo, Ramadanman and Pangaea. Listening to their shows was heavy influence and a bit of a history lesson into dubstep for me. At the same time I was really trying to learn as much as I could about Jungle and Garage. I spent about a year just catching up on past tunes. I just really like the sound that was represented back then and love to hear how some producers have been manipulating it today.

Do you try to 'fit in' to a particular scene? If so what scene? If not, why not?

I try to keep up to date with what's going on in the UK, being as that is where the majority of the music comes from that I like to mix... I just try to get clued up through listening to mixes from artists who are pushing the sound I like over there, radio shows, reading interviews, keeping on top of certain record label releases, etc.

What are the positive influences you draw on from the Melbourne Music scene?

Most of the crews around Melbourne who put on the same style nights as Wobble are encouraging new DJs / producers to step up at the moment so it's a good time for getting out there amongst it. I'm happy that we have got to the stage where most international DJs are including Melbourne on their tours too so that also gives me some incentive.

Are there any negative influences within the Melbourne Music scene?

Been getting a bit over going to the same venues for dnb/dubstep events. But I think it's just really hard to book other places when more commercial music is dominating Melbourne...and probably something to do with noise restrictions. It's different if the club's got the right atmosphere for the night it holds though.

Do you have a goal you are working towards musically?

I've really slacked off from attempting to make beats and put mixing as my main focus, but I think its time to revisit the production side of things...I'm only just getting back into it...got to sort my priorities out.
